How can you learn about a culture and meet locals without speaking their language?

TRAVEL-faqs

Language certainly becomes a barrier when we travel to different countries especially the places where locals do not speak English. But technology has definitely solved this problem to a greater extent and I would like to share my personal experience of how I chat with my Romanian friend who does not know English at all and there is no rocket science involved here, I use google translate.

But, that’s about online chatting and many a times the translation is not so accurate and of course in person it becomes a bit more difficult. When it comes to knowing culture or people, there is one thing which works wonders and that is show interest in them. You have to express respect, warmth, love and interest towards their culture and you will make friends. Love and emotions can help you overcome any barrier. Here are a few tips which might help and the first one is obvious.

  • Try and learn basic sentences and words before you go to that place for example if you have to ask about a place, a person’s name, about bus/train timings, directions to the bus stop/restroom/town center, etc. At least learn to greet them in their own language which will definitely help you make friends.
  • Learn to make use of gestures which can be both funny and fun but it can help.
  • You should keep an edition of Point It with you which is a little book filled with photographs of everything you could ever need to ask for.

Why do you need to turn off all your electronic devices before an airplane takes off and lands?

Quotes from pilots about it:

“People don’t understand why they can’t use their mobile phones. Well, what can happen is 12 people will decide to call someone just before landing, and I can get a false reading on my instruments saying that we are higher than we really are.” – Jim Tilmon

“We’re not trying to ruin your fun by making you take off your headphones. We just want you to be able to hear us if there’s an emergency.” – Patrick Smith
